Con Ed and NYSEG are pushing for double digit rate increases next year, trying to jack up prices by hundreds of dollars just for you to keep your lights on. That’s at least a week or two’s worth of groceries or a car payment for the exact same amount of energy you are using today.
I’ve talked to seniors on fixed incomes worried they can’t afford to turn on the heat. I’ve met young families considering leaving the Hudson Valley because of how high costs have gotten. While Hudson Valley families struggle, utility executives are making more money than ever. Con Ed claims it couldn’t afford to keep your utility bills down but the company had no problem paying its CEO nearly $15 million last year.
